East Gippsland’s ‘Slipway’ set to become vibrant outdoor dining space

As restrictions ease and the weather warms, Victorian’s are desperate to enjoy a cool bev or two al fresco – and thanks to the Victorian government’s announcement last month to relax and expand outdoor planning permits, soon we can do just that.

Construction is already underway at countless venues across the state, but there’s one in particular that’s got us quaking, nay shaking, in anticipation.

The iconic Old Slipway site, located right on the picturesque foreshore of Lakes Entrance, is set to undergo a radical transformation into a pop-up culinary and arts space during summer 20/21.

Guided by the steady hand of The Slipway Collective, here patrons can expect to find local producers, eateries and artists offering up their finest treats, all while soaking up some much needed rays of sunshine.

Onsite there will be a food and beverage ‘pods’ where folks can stock up on yummies, a flexible event area with ample shade, a portable cool room, staff parking and a float art pavilion. The perfect set-up for a day by the sea.

It is the first development announcement out of the East Gippsland area, whose council has taken a proactive approach to supporting hospitality businesses during COVID-19. They have made the most of the Victorian Government’s Business Resilience Package which offers $5,000 grants for businesses looking to expand their outdoor seating capacity.

While we don’t have the detailed plans just yet, we’re getting by imagining ourselves spending a day breathing in the fresh sea air, partaking in some creative activities and, of course, polishing it off with a bright glass of white.
