Omeo – the Great Alpine’s unassuming gem

Nestled on the edge of Gippsland’s snowy mountains, overlooking the magnificent vistas of the Victorian alps, sits a humble yet historic township that should perhaps take pride of place on our winter itineraries.

Omeo is a pioneering mountain town renowned for its gold mining history, high country cattle grazing and heritage buildings. Situated along the Great Alpine Road just 40 minutes east of Mount Hotham, this regional hamlet is a charming alternative to set up base for one’s annual ski trip to the High Country.

There are only a few hundred people who live in Omeo – further adding to the town’s warmth and community feel. But its size says nothing of its tourist experiences. Omeo’s outdoor treasures, its cafes and restaurants, its arts and cultural scene and its accommodation offerings make it just as suitable as a snow field ‘home base’ as a holiday destination in and of itself.

Outdoor Adventures

Skiing Winter High Country Ski Fields bike trail trackA town that’s name itself is derived from the Aboriginal word for “mountains” is bound to be a treasure trove of natural wonderment.

Feed your soul as you take in panoramic views of the alps and surrounding countryside at the Kozsciusko Lookout just outside the town along the Great Alpine Road, or head along the Oriental Claims walk, Ah Fongs Loop – excellent for all those bird lovers out there. Venture a little further out and you’ll discover the Cassilis Historic Area, which was once among the richest goldfields in the state.

Something to think ahead about for spring for those of you who love to get the adrenalin pumping, the White Water Rafting will do just the trick. With more than 60 rapids, this world-class white-water rafting on the Mitta Gorge will have you experiencing towering granite river gorges in the exquisite wilderness of the majestic Alpine National Park.

And if you are indeed staying in Omeo as part of your winter snow holiday (the drive to Mount Hotham makes for a gradual, relaxing ascent), or you’re a bit of an avid mountain biker, make sure to hit up the Ski Hire, Service Station & Mountain Bike Hire for all your gear.

(BTW: The town also has a killer new pump track walking distance from town. It is huge! And is suitable for beginners and experts alike.)

Eat & Drink

Basically – your belly will be warmed up just as well as your soul. Don’t you fret.

Art & Culture

Mount Hotham Alternative Accommodation Skiing A stroll through Omeo’s town centre, and you’ll easily see its connections to the goldfields. Visit the A.M. Pearson Historical Park to see the town’s original courthouse, post office, gaol built of logs, blacksmith shop, stables and waterwheel – all dating back to the mid to late 19th century.

The township of Swifts Creek, 20 minutes’ drive south of Omeo, is also home to the Great Alpine Gallery – a non-profit community art space operated by volunteers and celebrating the work of local artists. Founded in 1998, the Gallery features a main space of rotating displays as well as a number of special exhibitions through the year.  Visitors can also nab themselves a nice handmade gift or two from the gallery shop.

As of June 24, the Gallery will be launching the exhibiting LIGHT as part of the East Gippsland Winter Festival. Showcasing light-filled artworks across the mediums of projection, video, painting, photography, fabric, fibre, sculpture, ceramics and more. The exhibition aims to bring light and warmth to the winter season.

Accommodation

Omeo’s aforementioned Hill Top Hotel and Golden Age double-up as accommodation and food options, so you get an all-in-one experience. Plus you’ll get the country hospitality that comes with, and that cannot be beat.

Other places to stay including the Colonial Motel and the Omeo Motel which offer the same level of comfort and delight, and will feel just like home. You’ll even be able to treat yourself to a nice warm cooked brekky.

Then you’ve got apartments such as Holston and Snug as a Bug for that added bit of charm and a real laid-back country experience.

Wherever you decide, rest assured (no pun intended) that your winter away will be filled with a certain warmth that only an unassuming village like Omeo can conjure.
